IT News for February, 2013
Parent, guardian secure services expanded
The University of Delaware has expanded the services of its "Parent/Guardian Secure Services" web application. The application allows students to share portions of their UD education information with individuals they designate as parents or guardians.
“Providing secure services to parents and guardians was a strategic implementation involving several campus units such as the Registrar, Student Financial Services, Housing, Dining and several other departments who worked behind-the-scenes to contribute to this initiative. With the recent upgrades in our security processes, we wanted to provide these services to parents,” Maria Mullin, manager, IT Web Development, said.
UD Mobile Web upgraded to enhanced mobile framework
The University of Delaware has upgraded UD Mobile Web to a feature-rich application based on the open-source framework called Kurogo.
“This enhanced version of UD Mobile Web provides an improved rendering engine that supports both tablets and smartphones,” Dave Costrini, manager, IT Web Development, said. “UD will no longer need to maintain multiple apps for different devices.”

University IT Transformation Grant program open for submissions
The IT Transformation Grant program returns this year with expanded funding opportunities, a two-stage proposal process and a new timeline. This program offers grants to faculty to transform education with the support of new and innovative uses of technology.
This year, the program combines resources from IT and the Center for Teaching and Assessment of Learning. The funding opportunities have been expanded to include faculty time, graduate or undergraduate student time, conference attendance and travel, software and equipment.
The process begins with a short explanation of the faculty member's idea in a pre-proposal. A successful pre-proposal should convey the strength of the idea to the review committee as briefly as possible.
Recent phishing scams net dozens of UD email addresses
Recent phishing scams have led several dozen UD faculty, staff, and students to submit information that has caused their email accounts to be hijacked. Think before you click.
For Faculty: Tuesday Tech Talks Scheduled
A new spring series — Tuesday Tech Talks — will bring University of Delaware faculty together for 14 short presentations and discussions to introduce emerging technologies and examine their implications for education and society.
Visiting speakers will join UD faculty members to lead the discussions. The series is coordinated by John Jungck, director of Interdisciplinary Science Learning Laboratories.
Faculty members are encouraged to use the registration form to indicate their interest in presenting and leading a discussion that is currently on the list or to suggest a topic not listed.
