Dec. 7: IT-ATS presents mini-conference on student engagement
University of Delaware IT Academic Technology Services (IT-ATS) will present a mini-conference on technology and student engagement from 9 a.m.-1 p.m., Friday, Dec. 7, in the Rodney Room of the Perkins Student Center.
The event will answer such questions as: How do students use their web-enabled devices during your class? Do they use them to bring material to the class discussion and to take notes? Do they access Facebook, YouTube and The Review? Or, do they do all of the above -- and at the same time? Is student engagement affected? What classroom management strategies are available that are consistent with your teaching philosophy?
Lunch will be served.
UD upgrades parent, guardian security for 'My Finances' site
The University of Delaware has upgraded the security for parents and guardians to access students’ financial information.
The interface that allows UD staff, students and alumni to log in securely to University systems and forms is called the Central Authentication Service (CAS).
CAS has recently been upgraded as part of IT Web Development's (IT-WD) efforts to continually improve the University’s business systems infrastructure and security; CAS will now be used as the basis for guest authentication.

Teaching future educators how to read and write in a new way
Rachel Karchmer-Klein, an associate professor in the University of Delaware’s School of Education, is teaching future educators to read and write multimodal texts, which includes everything from literature on a Kindle or iPad to information on a website.
“With traditional texts we teach students to read left to right, top to bottom, but electronic text is different because it contains multiple modes,” Karchmer-Klein explained.
Professor uses two different learning management systems to gauge the utility of each
Anuradha Sivaraman, assistant professor of business administration at the University of Delaware, received the opportunity to test drive the learning management system Canvas in spring 2012. Using Canvas in one section of a marketing course and Sakai@UD in another section of the same course, Sivaraman was able to compile student feedback as well as experiment with the two management systems.
“I felt like it was easier to use, compared to my first time using Sakai. If you already know Sakai, of course the transition is going to be so much easier. And a lot of features start out being similar to Sakai but then turn out to be much simpler,” Sivaraman said.
