UD prof engages students with Facebook Groups and Google Sites
Phillip Penix-Tadsen, assistant professor of foreign languages and literatures at the University of Delaware, is reaching his students at new levels inside and outside the classroom. Penix-Tadsen and his students are using Facebook Groups and Google Sites to increase engagement and participation.

Rhythmic grammar: University's Saad Maura uses music in Spanish grammar instruction
Asima Saad Maura, assistant professor of foreign languages and literatures at the University of Delaware, is bringing rhythm to Spanish grammar instruction. Many students struggle with the preterit and imperfect tenses because English does not differentiate between the two. This lack of reference makes it difficult for students to understand, so Saad Maura introduces her students to the concept in a fun way.
“To me, music is contagious,” Saad Maura said. “I want to create that sensation of joy with grammar.”
Working with sponsored program data in UDataGlance becomes easier
As of Aug. 2, two new tabs are available in the University of Delaware's UDataGlance -- a user-friendly web interface with which to perform daily administrative tasks -- for reviewing and monitoring proposals and awards.
“The sponsored program data will have the same great features of the Financial Summary tab: friendly interface, summarized financial data and drill-through capabilities to transaction detail and many originating Web Forms for proposal and award data,” said Chris White of the University Research Office.
UD faculty and student engagement focus of IT events
There is still time for University of Delaware faculty to register for the i>clicker “Back to School Sail” event on Tuesday, Aug. 21.
Faculty who plan to use i>clickers in their classes this fall, or who just want to see what others are doing to increase classroom interaction, might have interest in the three-hour program.

Improved IT test scoring service
An improved test scoring service is now in effect. When clients run a test scoring job, they will receive an additional file -- an item analysis of test questions that has been created using the scanning program. They can use the new data file to assess the quality of individual questions given on an exam.
Alert: New phishing scam
University of Delaware IT and PNC Bank are reporting a new automated telephone phishing scam.
PNC Bank said that customers are receiving an automated telephone call saying that the individual’s PNC Bank card has been compromised. The caller then instructs the individual to press “1” and enter his or her card number.
